The Hardest Hair Colors to Maintain.

The hardest colors to maintain are typically reds as a fade out the fastest. I recommend color refresh in between appointments to keep the color vibrant. Also, trying to maintain a blue black color is very difficult as a blue tone tends to leave hair the fastest as it’s the biggest molecule.

A money piece can be lower maintenance, as they can be touched up pretty quickly in salon. If you have a high contrast money piece it could feel that becomes a bit more maintenance as it’s not as seamless to grow out. I recommend doing a root tap to keep the color brighter on the face but soft at the root - It will make the out growth less obvious.

A traditional highlight can be more maintenance, as you notice the outgrowth sooner.

A bleach touchup, unless you are very light naturally, tends to be more upkeep. I was once told, by a celebrity stylist, “you can’t be a cheap blonde.” That’s basically the end all and be all for me as a colorist. It is more of a high maintenance color but so beautiful and striking when done well!

The easiest colors to maintain all depend on what your natural color is, I always recommend only going two shades lighter than your natural if you want to have a color grow out as painlessly as possible.

A Balayage is meant to grow out seamless. When done properly this should be the lowest maintenance of all colors as it’s meant to look grown out and is flattering on all hair colors.
